Megavina's review: The Refinery Saigon
Megavina's Investigators have visited this restaurant, they ordered a selection of dishes and beverages, visited the facilities (toilets and had a look on the kitchen area if possible), they checked the cleanliness and how the staff interacted with clients. Our investigators work anonymously, the best way to get real and objective reviews because the staff and the managers don't know that we are investigating.
Friendly staff, Tasty and Welcoming
- by Megavina Travel - Establishment visited January 12, 2016It was quite difficult to find the Refinery restaurant from the road even if we knew the address because it's located inside a courtyard, we had to enter through an old and dirty yellow gate, it was not very attractive! Inside this courtyard with several other restaurants, the Refinery had a french colonial atmosphere with dark wooden tables, 1 small flower on each table and tealights to create a warm ambience. On the terrace, tiny tables and a lot of customers mainly tourists sipping on beers, cocktails or wine.
Welcoming was friendly and polite while the menu offered a large selection of Italian/French dishes. Our waitress could speak a fluent English which we thought was pretty cool.
As starter, we selected marinated barbecued squids with salsa verde, a very good appetizer, squids were soft and yummy and served with a garlic / parsley and chili. Perfectly cooked, sweet flavors, a perfect medley of aromas. This dish was offered at 115.000vnd.
To continue, we selected a salad with Panzanella (crusty bread called croutons in french) and tomatoes, in fact we were expecting a starter but the quantity in the plate suggested more a main course and the tomatoes were cut very big. So it could be the right choice for someone who just wants to eat a salad but not if he wants to taste many dishes.
As main course, we chose a chicken Paillard and salad, the poultry was tender and grilled. The way they grilled could be probably improved to avoid the bitter aftertaste on poultry breast. I personally liked it but my vietnamese guest didn't enjoy.
To finish, we ordered a Cheese Platter composed of gorgonzola, a kind of sour cream, Edam-like and Camembert served with cashew, raisins and of course fresh bread.
As drink, we didn't order wine but a Carlsberg draught and a smoothie strawberry/banana/pineapple called Tropical Revitaliser.
The cuisine was good without being excellent, we enjoyed the atmosphere but when we left, it started to be crowded so quite noisy. Many foreign customers. Toilets are the same for men and women, they are hidden behind a curtain. Prices are correct for Ho Chi Minh city. The only bad point was the light inside the restaurant, some customers had to use the lamp of their mobile to read the menu. May be they wanted to create a romantic ambience with tealights but in reality, it's true, the dining room was too dark to read the menu but correct to eat and enjoy a dinner.

How to find The Refinery Saigon
The Refinery restaurant is not visible from the road, the best way to find the main entrance is to start from the Park Hyatt hotel and try to find a yellow arch with the number 74. At day time, you could probably see small logos of different restaurants printed on a large banner.
