Nice atmosphere, clean, bland food

- by - Restaurant visited May 19, 2016

There are plenty of restaurants and eateries (Quán ăn) in Tay Ninh, some are quite good but many of them are family businesses with a lack of professionalism, experience in the food and hospitality industry.

At Phúc Thiên Khang restaurant, welcoming was very poor, a waitress wearing the traditional vietnamese clothes (ao dai) came to us, no smile, no hello, nothing! We just followed her until a private room.

Each private room had its own air conditioning unit and toilets. A table large enough for 6 people. Decoration was very simple, a painting on the wall, dirty curtains and cobwebs dangling from your ceiling.

We selected an assortment of dishes such as pineapple slices, steamed squids and garlic served with green onions, white onions, lettuce and fresh herbs. Then we ordered "Cá thác lác hấp cải xanh" composed of Bronze featherback and chilli pepper wrapped in mustard greens, topped with green onions and steamed in a bamboo dish. It was also served with ba khía (spicy crab sauce). As main course we chose "gỏi bò Thiên Khang" which is warm sweet & sour beef salad topped with fresh mint and accompanied by bánh phồng tôm (krupuk / shrimp chips). Our meal rounded off with prawns stuffed with cheese, a very basic dish, no decoration, quite bland in fact. Cheese used was probably "The laughing cow" a soft cream cheese more tasty cold than hot.

As drinks, we asked if they had imported beer, they did! So we chose imported Heineken. Heineken made in Vietnam has a very different taste and less carbonation. Heineken beer brewed in Amsterdam has lots of carbonation, prickly hop notes, super mild malt barely toasted. If you have the chance to compare both in same time, the result is puzzling!

We can't say that the meal was good or bad, let's say average. It's missing decoration and attention to details. Many of the dishes were bland, for example the squids were tasteless and not well cleaned. Bronze featherback was quite good, a bit spicy but ok for most of the palates. Beef salad was savory, the only dish with decoration! Pineapple was mature so quite sweet, they even thought to serve it with tiny forks.

Concerning the staff, we didn't see them so much, they just brought the dishes and the bill. There is a gap between too much interference and a lack of personal contact. We think that staff should be the care of the customers a bit more.

We were quite disappointed with the bill because all the prices on the invoice were different from the menu and when we asked the waitress why, she just said, prices changed last year, which is a stupid answer and a lack of professionalism. The difference between the menu and the bill was around 50.000vnd. At the end, the waitress didn't get any tips because of her attitude.
