Clean, tasty, grill your own

- by - Eatery visited May 21, 2016

There are plenty of restaurants and eateries (Quán ăn) in Tay Ninh, some are quite good but many of them are family businesses with a lack of professionalism, experience in the food and hospitality industry.

At Quán ăn Mộc Trà, welcoming was correct, the restaurant was particularly clean comparing to other eateries. One large dining room, with several tables for 4 people.

The menu containing pictures offered a selection of meat to grill, squids, fishes, prawns and hot pot.

We selected as starter, an assortment of dishes such as a combo composed of different meats, vegetables and fresh herbs. One of the most interesting features about Quán ăn Mộc Trà is the world-famous grill where guests are invited to cook their own meat, seafood, fishes and vegs. Grill your own is not a new concept, many restaurants in Ho Chi Minh city offers this service, for example Barbecue Garden, Gen Korean BBQ, Sumo BBQ, Bo Tung Xeo. 5ku station...). What we liked is to be able to choose the perfect cooking for all the food.

We ordered as main course, tiger prawns presented on skewers and squids ready to be grilled. In fact we could expect they clean inside those small cephalopods, draining the gladius and cutting the beak. Two parts that nobody eats!

As second main course, we decided to taste a Hot pot Thai. When it says "Thai" it means spicy or very spicy! The hot pot was composed of meat, shrimps, clams, fish and Surimi. It's very unusual to eat cooked Surimi, usually we eat Surumi as appetizer and cold or in a salad. It was the first time, we ate it hot! It was served with rice vermicelli, rau muống (water spinach), rau nhút (neptunia), đậu bắp (ladies' fingers, ochro or gumbo).

Concerning the staff, they were polite and brought the dishes not in same time. The food was quite good, we particularly enjoyed the dish called Ba rọi bò cuộn nấm (Enoki mushrooms wrapped in thin slices of beef, this mushroom is thin and long with a crisp texture and often used in the asian cuisine).
