Shinagawa Shukuba Matsuri is a festival for celebrating the tradition and culture of Shinagawa, an area that thrived as the first of the 53 post stations of the Tokaido.
It’s held on the last Saturday and Sunday of each September along a two-kilometer-long stretch of the former Tokaido between Yatsuyama, in Kita Shinagawa, and Aomono-yokocho, in Minami Shinagawa.
An array of fun events and attractions are organized including a procession of glamorous oiran courtesans, a parade of towns people from the premodern Edo period, all-you-can-stuff vegetables offered by shopping districts, a food fair presenting tasty delights from across Japan, tsuji-rakugo storytelling, taiko drum performances, picture-story shows, lessons in traditional handmade toys, a mini steam locomotive, and a variety of refreshment stalls.
